Music has changed over the years and with it has changed the way its created, the way its consumed, its role in society, and the general culture behind it. In this course, we take a look at written music since the medieval period and study how it has changed and evolved; from the baroque era, to the classical era, to the romantic era, to the modern era. Understanding the musical culture of a particular time can make music easier to understand and enjoy. We employed different modes of listening and really dissected the music to analyze and appreciate famous pieces throughout history.

As we journeyed through the progression of musical eras and their respective famous composers, we examined the relationships between musicians and their audiences and our final paper was centered around this topic. By thinking about how the audience was meant to percieve the music, we were able to better relate to the composers original intentions with the piece. The purpose of these peices were to achieve perfection or invoke a feeling in the listener; after all, the music would be nothing without the audience to appreciate it.

Concert Reflection

As part of this seminar, we were required to attend three concerts and write a short reflection on each experience. This was my first concert and I had never experienced anything like it. My first concert I was still taking in the new experinece but it allowed me to start solidifying the things I had seen in class.

Before this class, I had never studied music before. This class was quite challenging to me, simply because my ear wasn't trained to listen to music analytically. Often times I would have to listen to a piece of music multiple times to identify its meter or texture. Also as part of the class I attended three concerts at the college conservatory of music. I had never been to concerts before and it helped me get a better understanding of music and a better appreication for the art.

This class has given me a much bigger appreciation for music and I was able to make the first step in venturing into a realm of study I had never looked at before. Listening to the music along with the history and culture behind it helped me get an understanding of the evolution of the art as well as better enjoy the music overall. I plan to continue listening to music more critically and now I notice things that I hadn't before.

"Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything."
